Thank you, Dr. Marstellar for visiting our site.  Thanks for noticing the student video. This was a second love for him and I wanted to try to keep him involved in different ways.  Creating videos of our time together seemed to just work and allowed me to showcase to other students and the university what we were actually doing all year.

 

 As part of the LU LSAMP program scholars are strongly encouraged to get off campus and participate in outreach activities at local community centers. They also serve as summer interns for elementary middle and high school programs teaching classes in their areas of interest. 

All scholars go through a series of professional preparation activities including resume writing, career assessment, personal statement or research interests essay writing sessions, elevator speeches and more.  All scholars work with the CO-PI and other campus programs to secure Year round jobs, research or internships.

 Thank you for posting this video. I've been a facilitator for the STEM For All Video Showcase for three years and this is the first one I've viewed that was made by a student. It's a great way to let prospective students for the program see it from someone who has direct experience. 

I also went to the url that was listed in the introductory comments by Professor Stallings and was very impressed by the breadth of research topics in which students have engaged. Very often, the videos that highlight specific programs are very focused on one area of STEM. This clearly indicates to me that the LULSAMP program is embedded across the university. Congratulations on this accomplishment!

Two questions that I do have are 1) whether your LSAMP offers any kind of professional development to faculty who are not directly associated with the program so that they can work more effectively with students who are involved, and 2) how much the LSAMP model has permeated other parts of the university system so that faculty and students who are not part of your LSAMP are also able to participate in the kinds of research opportunities as LSAMP students? 

Really great work.  I wondered too about mentor preparation.  We at Emory have developed a course series for faculty that really seems to help develop mentoring skills and cultural competence.  Happy to share if you are interested. We also use Entering Mentoring materials for GS and PDs and also Entering Research materials for undergrads and new grads.  I will post links if you are interested.

 

Great program in a strong alliance! Do LU have to do their MOLSAMP research project with LU faculty or may the work with folks within the alliance or even faculty from other institutions?

Our students participate in internships at Lincoln, at institutions within and outside the alliance.  My goal is to have each student graduate with at least two internships or REU’s under their belt with one on campus and one off campus.
