    Welcome to "Those who can Teach", a Noyce scholarship program having positive effects on minority students to motivate them and prepared them as great teachers. Noyce summer internship activities help them to understand the essence of the teaching profession.

    We are happy to share the strategies we use for our program. We hope that everyone who visits will comment on our work!  How does it compare to your own experiences teaching and learning science?  

    In addition, we have some specific questions for folks doing similar work.  

    1. For teachers:  What discussion, resources, and strategies do you use in your classroom?  
    2. For teacher leaders:  What advice do you have for new teacher leaders?
    3. For districts:  As we think about disseminating our experience, what would be most valuable for you to know?
    4. For education researchers:  What are the important factors that influence to become great teachers?  
    5. For all people:  What strategies and tools have been effective in recruiting and motivating students to be STEM teachers?

    Thank you for sharing this work, Salam! I'm a big fan of the Noyce program, and it looks like you are leveraging the resources you have to really get people engaged. I'm curious, how to you support your students in making connections back to their formal curriculum?

    Thank you very much Barry. One example is during the internship program students are required to work together to plan and teach lessons in their specific content area. They work with faculty (teacher education and/or content expert) to ensure that lesson plans are based on appropriate standards and that lessons are taught in an appropriate manner.

    This is a great project. It is particularly impressive that you are working towards better representation of black males in teaching professions. This is such an important step to creating equity across all disciplines, but especially in STEM. Great work!

    I am curious about the way you structured funding for the students. What benefits have you seen from funding the last two years of the students' undergraduate studies?

    Thank you very much for your feedback.

    The scholarship pays for their tuition & fees, room and board, and books. Many of our scholars came from a low-income background. Earlier they used to do several part-time jobs to pay their tuition fees. Because of the scholarship now they can focus more on the study and their performance increased signoficantly.

    This is such great and important work!  So glad to see the exposure to inspiring, hands-on and contextual learning.  Do you also expose the students to any digital programming for the classroom as this is such a growing area?

    This program is off to a great start. Your Noyce program is supporting students financially and by giving them experiences that will help them later on in the classroom. In our program we find that the networking and peer support is one of the most critical things. For students to know that there is a group of peers who are planning on teaching early in their college careers cam be really encouraging. 

    We have been working to find ways to get our Noyce students experiences working with young students through activities like Earth Day where students come to the college to learn about environmental science. Of course that was difficult this year. I am wondering what types of activities your Noyce group has been doing.

    Thank you very much for your feedback. Scholars complete field experiences in different schools. Also, during the internship, we had them engage with youth at an informal science education program at a STEM Innovation Center.
