    Welcome to IC4, the International Community for Collaborative Content Creation. This video seeks to illustrate a vision for building next generation scientists and engineers through international collaboration.  New this year: The (CC) option allows captioning in Kiswahili, Portuguese, Spanish, and English, reflecting the first language of our students and teacher facilitators, including those from Kenya, Brazil, Mexico, and the US and enables more discussion from family and friends of our students in those countries. 

    Participants teach one another through their shared interests and shared projects. They develop sophisticated and lifelong collaboration competencies while navigating scientific learning through the circumstances of the pandemic.  The project has evolved in exciting ways, and we hope to encourage your contribution to a lively conversation thread below.  Please share questions, comments, suggestions, or opportunities to come alongside this network in any way that you find useful.  We are thrilled to have you learn about and from our students and teachers, and to learn about the research underlying this effort.     Hello all,
    Thank you for visiting our video presentation! I want to echo on Dr. Hamilton's introduction-- we are so proud of our IC4 community. A huge thanks to all our partners across the globe-- teacher leaders, peer facilitators, country coordinators, research team and most of all, our student learner participants!

    We are also happy to share that the video was put together by two of our IC4 project alumni, Dante Schulz and Ishtiaque Mahdi (now third year university students) and another research team member, Julia Gibson (third year undergraduate student). We also give shout outs to Rina (IC4 member in Kenya) and Luiz (research team member and global meet-up facilitator) for lending their voices to the narration. We are grateful for their work on the video and continuing efforts in the IC4 community!

    Thank you Elphas for your feedback. I am glad that for the many months of school closures in Kenya, children from poor and remote Kongoni community still had access to learning through Kongoni library and IC4 club. The learning and growth that students at the library experienced was greatly enhanced and facilitated through their regular positive interactions with their peers from Colegio Bicentenario in Morelia, South Fayette and Spring Valley, taking in others’ ideas, feedback and viewpoints.

    Good Morning Everyone,

    What a beautiful project that capitalizes on the virtual world we’ve all had to occupy and in doing so opens up a form of global communication that might truly enhance student learning. I would love to hear how this worked in practice maybe by hearing about a particular STEM project (the musical instruments for example, a robotics project, or possibly the Rube Goldberg machine). How was a particular project conducted? How were the students from different countries connected? How were language barriers negotiated?  Etcetera.

     You then discussed how you analyzed student learning – what types of prompting would encourage connections and student engagement for example. But I’d love to hear a bit more about how the global and virtual environment (those two components) changed these outcomes. Were you finding that the virtual, international community created around these projects shifted the types of educational practices that work in more traditional classroom settings?

    Hi Amy, and thank you.  I think others may weigh in, but the global aspect changes the nature of the challenges that students bring and discuss in the virtual setting.  We have learned a great deal about rain forest challenges from students there, and we hope to engage in scientists and students there on a sensor-driven fire prevention initiative in the Pantanal, the world's largest rainforest, with the idea that the project could engender replications in the US, and especially in CA where fires are so devastating.  Similarly, students in Kenya might share water management issues that are unique to a sub-Saharan and low income country.  So the students are bringing unique and "this is my life" experience to their peers in other countries.  They do that from the relative comfort of their own country and culture while "stepping into" the culture of their colleagues.  So that is very rewarding to experience.

    Beyond that, the global aspect builds a sense of curiosity and community.  We don't fully understand how deeply virtual communication can help meet our human need to explore and understand the world around us.  And when we do, especially through video interaction, we are in a better position to undo the mistrust and suspicion that has marked all of our cultures when geographic separation defined our differences.  Thank you for your question!

    Hi Amy, just to further answer your questions, the projects are conducted in such a way that students take full responsibility of each and every step that leads to the success of their projects and the leaders just come in to facilitate communications amongst them.

    Students willingly choose to collaborate with each other in a projects of their choice. Facilitators initiate communication to kickstart the collaboration and then follow up with the collaborators till the completion of their collaboration

    For the case of language barrier, IC4 has translators who break the language barriers.

    The responses by Eric, Ateamate and others are precise. Collaboration by students is also digitally enabled, which affords the team members opportunities to improve digital literacy skills besides the inherent learning of concepts relevant to the projects. My son joined the team recently and I observed with awe how he was striving to use Google to translate simple texts to Portuguese. My assessment of this is that the IC4 members are also learning social skills like empathy and are living the spirit of global citizenship. 
    You may have also noted that the video is among the few with multiple language options under CC

    Dear Amy, Mr Ogwel is a long-time colleague who helps to lead professional development in STEM fields for the Kenyan Ministry of Education with a pan-African charge.  

    Ateng', I think we need now to find ways to formalize this model and imagination to find a next step - so asking you to think with us or us to think with you.  One thing that recurs is a move to more live problem solving with problems that local or national governments or NGOs are seeking to solve.  Needs more thinking.  We have a couple of examples, but need to find points of entry for the student teams.

    Yes, thank you for sharing such interesting project. I appreciate how you fostered students' learning about content as well as their learning about others. Opportunities such as these have been shown to foster students' understanding of others, appreciation for diversity of thought and experience, and their own abilities to foster welcoming and affirming environments. 

    I'd love to know more about how you prepared students for this work. How was the project introduced to them? What experiences set them up for these engagements?  Was there pre-work for students to do to set them up for productive experiences with others?

    Hi! I'm Toby a copresenter and researcher for IC4. When students join a meetup, we stress the importance of student to student interaction. First, the students get to know each other through a brief warm-up activity or activity discussion. Later, they often agree on a topic that they are passionate about such as the environment. Our California students lived near a marina and experienced life near ocean pollution. When the Finnish students learned of this need, they were eager to collaborate with the U.S. site! The best part part was when the U.S. students began learning to speak Finnish to chat with their new friends!

    Hello.  I'm Shad, a co-presenter and one of the facilitators for the South Fayette site just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Students who participate in IC4 at South Fayette are typically invited by Mr. Mannarino (our site's co-facilitator) or referred to us by teachers based upon their interest in STEAM, programming, or multimedia production. As students are on-boarded, they receive training in the use of Sway (a Microsoft presentation tool), Slack, and video production. Their first project is to introduce themselves to the community by recording a video and putting it into a Sway.  Then they share this video to Slack and respond to one another.  We also scaffold the projects.  Students start at level 1 completing a project independently or with someone from their own site. They post the project to Slack for asynchronous feedback, then share the project live on a global meetup for synchronous critique.  A level 2 project is one that is created with participants from other sites.  The collaboration occurs both asynchronously on Slack and synchronously on Zoom meetings.  Level 1 and level 2 projects typically involve more facilitation from the site leaders to set up meetings, encourage collaboration, and provide resources.  However at the 3rd level, students take on the responsibilities of making the initial connection, staying in contact throughout the project, setting goals, and presenting the final project in a global meetup. 

    As far as preparing students for engaging with others in a global meetup, we have been forced to hold our meetups virtually this year due to the pandemic, so many students are familiar with video conferencing etiquette. In the past, we would review this with our students prior to the meetups.  Additionally, during the calls, our facilitators are incredible at leading online discussions and encouraging participation and dialogue from the participants.

    To chime in further on the excellent responses from Toby and Shad, we also try to have a pre-meeting with any new students to help them feel comfortable with people they are meeting for the first time in a virtual space. Pre-pandemic, becoming familiar with and troubleshooting through the video conference technology was important to the onboarding process.  Of course now, many U.S. students are more familiar with connecting via Zoom (which we have been using since early 2018), though the pre-session is still helpful to encourage them to get into the mindset of breaking from the typical classroom experience, and see IC4 as a community learning space where student voice is encouraged and valued.

    It’s a great opportunity to continue learning about the amazing work that the IC4 team are doing. The turn of events due to COVID-19 pandemic confirms your visionary approach to digital enabled personalized and authentic learning. 
    The IC4 movement is also inclusive, providing the environment for learners to imagine snd create on the one hand, and for researchers to be deeply immersed in the pursuit of understanding human cognition through Epistemic Network Analysis. The inclusion of the CC is amazing, and further contextualizes the messaging.

    Am honoured to witnesses the growth in the IC4, and look forward to reading comments for improvement and learning from those offering nodes for more strategic partnerships and collaborations.

    Hello George, and thank you for the question.  This is an informal science education program that represents diverse interests of students from various countries.  The projects originate from the students and their teacher facilitators.  Interest-driven Creator / IDCTheory has been developing over the past few years as a means to explain and give shape to cultivating student interest in devising challenges or projects they pursue (not a fair summary of the theory, but perhaps ok for now.)  In the spirit of IDC, we have had students express interest in creating musical instruments based on their research in how instruments are formed and then using waste materials from construction sites.  Thank you for your kind words :)

    Hi all!  Like Danielle mentioned, I'm a undergraduate student on our research team who helped put together our video for this year.  As a part of the project, I've had a wonderful experience giving feedback to students on their projects, helping run our weekly meet-ups, and assisting in the research process.  I joined the team just over a year ago, as the COVID-19 pandemic settled across the world.  I was amazed at the incredible digital global collaboration that has been happening for the past five years, as the rest of world was adjusting to meeting and working together virtually (often for the first time).  Since then, our learners' creativity has continued to impress and inspire me.  I hope you enjoy our video, and thank you so much for checking out our project!

    Hi all,

    I am so excited for this year's discussions. Just a quick background of me, I am part of the IC4 team as the global online meet-ups facilitator. I joined IC4 back in 2016 as on of the student pioneers of the project. I quickly developed interest in what the project was exposing us to and as time went by, I became passionate about seeing people sharing there projects and leading the discussions afterwards. That's when I embraced the facilitation role. It 5 years now and I'm so proud to be a part of the team.

    Kelsey, I think one thing that is novel in engaging Chapman is the shift in emphasis to larger challenges at the undergraduate level than the ones that we see with the secondary students.  I am trying to spin this into a more prominent feature in the next phase.  Perhaps for offline discussion, but I think this is the next generation of these kinds of collaborations.

    To be part of the IC4 project has been an incredible opportunity. I’ve enjoyed every meeting we’ve had and it has been pretty useful for me.
    Since we must work in teams with people from other schools my english and my communication skills have improved, along with my researching abilities. That’s how I know that IC4 has been an amazing journey for me. Many of the things that I learnt are helping me and will continue to help me in the future as a part of my resume.
    I thank everyone that has been on this project with us for the opportunity to participate in something that became so meaningful for me.

    This virtual world project provides academic opportunities to our Spring Valley HS students to connect with other students around the globe to work on STEM project ideas, and to learn from each other about culture and diversity. IC4 helps students to enhance communication skills, improve participatory teaching abilities, enhancing knowledge acquisition, gaining social skills, and to improve interpersonal skills. Currently, our Spring Valley High School students are collaborating with students from Mexico (Colegio Bicentenario in Morelia, Michoacán), Kenya, Brazil, and U.S.A. particularly in South Fayette, Pennsylvania, and in Chicago. Each Thursday, students synchronously Google Meet or Zoom to brainstorm STEM ideas and to work together to create projects. After our weekly meetup, our students will have about a week to collaborate and to complete their STEM projects with their teammates. Students work in groups sharing projects and providing feedback asynchronously using SLACK (communication platform) as a tool to communicate with one another. The following Thursday, students meet once again a couple of days before the IC4 global meeting to briefly present their team STEM projects and to get and provide constructive feedback to improve their presentations. Every other Saturday, students meet in a global meetup to present their final STEM presentations. Students from the U.S.A., Mexico, Kenya, and Brazil participate in these Global meetups. The Saturday virtual meetings with students are a unique educational experience. It is priceless! At the end of these  meetings, students write their own learning reflections, and in some cases providing ideas on how to improve the IC4 global participation. Also, we have students taking a Python programming class each Friday. In the programming online class, our students learn about the basics of programming using Python enhancing computational thinking skills. They collaborate with students from South Fayette, Chicago, Mexico, and soon to join this great collaboration effort students from RAK Academy located in Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

    The Saturday meetups are priceless-agreed, Mr. Ramirez! It is so great to young students from different parts of the world sharing their STEM projects and ideas with each other. The best part is that the students form relationships with their IC4 friends that often go beyond just sharing one Python project or video about climate change.     I have felt exceptionally lucky to witness the shared interests in coding, collaborations on creating websites and games among other students’ projects and how that stimulated meaningful research and peer-peer learning among IC4 students. As an educator, one of my happiest moments is when I witnessed students from Kenya, Brazil, Mexico and the US define objectives about their collaborative projects, plan their work and agree on their roles and responsibilities during synchronous IC4 meetups. In their small work groups, some safeguarded timelines and intervened when the process ran into communication challenges, while others created the digital content with ideas from team members and others co-designed and curated the final presentations.  These have been important steps in building trust between students from these diverse cultures who are miles apart and working in collaborative online environment.

    Zach, thank you for your thoughtful post above re: seeing students interact in this setting. I'm also amazed that since this an activity outside the classroom, the students come together voluntarily and I am so grateful for their continued motivation and interest to stay involved.  We normally take some weeks off during the year from meet-ups, but with the pandemic last year, we ended up continually meeting as we became a landing place for students who didn't have access to virtual learning experiences.  I'm glad IC4 could be that space for students.

In a world that often seems to be falling apart, to witness young people across cultures, nations, and languages collaborating in this way is truly beautiful.

    I see this being a great part of our future and can see it expanding to other subject areas as well.     I'll echo on that comment, Marlo.  Feel free to contact us as well-- if you send a note to info@ic4.site, it'll direct to both Eric and myself.  I will say from my experiences in setting up sites, having interested and invested administration (e.g. principal, headmaster), teachers and students are all needed to get off the ground and on the path to a good sustained collabrative effort. Starting small and then scaling is a great approach. It can take time and effort, but it's worth it! :)

    Great video! I would love more information on how you coded students' discourse. Did you start out with an existing coding scheme? Or did you make your own from scratch? What challenges did you encounter in the coding? And is a description of your method and coding anywhere? Our project also looks at students having discussions in online environments about math scenarios, and we are going to be starting to dig into coding our video data!

    Thank you for your question and for your interest in our project! We have mostly used codes that we have obtained from the data through grounded analysis. We have refined the codebook a few times over the course of the project to better represent the data, which has required reviewing our initial coding and recoding the data. We have also applied existing coding schemes for specific analyses (for example the UNESCO Future Competences Framework).

    One of the key challenges in our coding is the amount of time required. For each dataset, we have at least two members of the research team individually code the data then come together for a process of social moderation — a description of our coding can be found in papers we have published and presented, which can be found on the IC4 website under the Publications tab (https://ic4.site/research). We are also engaged in research to find ways to automate the coding. You will see some papers around this topic as well.     Hi Kristin, This is a great question! Students get into the program through a recruiting process. We invite students to participate doing global collaboration STEM projects in our IC4 community. Most of the time, when students find out that they will be working together with students from different continents, students do not hesitate to be part of IC4. Students enjoy meeting and learning about other cultures, and other languages. Usually, the recruiting process begins at the start of the school year.     Kristin, thanks for your visit to our page and to add on to Israel's answer, the students can participate for as long as they wish.  Initially, we ran by the U.S. academic year (taking a break June - August), but since some of our paricipating countries go to school by calendar year (e.g. January - November), the last two years we have actually be running the program straight through, with new students joining around Sept/Oct and then Jan/Feb, which correspond with the beginning of the academic school years of our different sites, as Israel mentions.  August is usually the month we are a little more quiet, as it tends to be a "holiday" month for all students.

    IC4 is one of the most incredible projects I have ever had the opportunity to participate in. I was initially involved in the project during my 8th grade year; however, due to other obligations I had at the time, I was unable to give it my full attention. This year I returned to the project and I could not be more grateful. My career aspiration is to one day become a professor in the field of computer science, and IC4 has given me an outlet to improve my teaching skills and understand how culture plays a role in education. The Fridays I spend assisting my fellow students in creating their own projects with the Python programming language is the best part of my week. I truly believe that IC4 is training students to change the world in STEM fields, no matter their location, race, background, or language.

One project I worked on and presented with another South Fayette student was about explaining Covid to someone 20 years from now. Some of the feedback was about presentation.     This was my first year of IC4 and I just have to say it has been an amazing experience. It felt so good to feel involved in these projects that could change STEM entirely. These global meetups have inspired me to create projects that could influence others. The projects have taught me to be more creative and smarter.     Am quite impressed by the organization of the 2021 STEM for All Video Showcase. I have noted the excellent layout, the filters and the Captions Options (CC) feature in the videos. This is quite useful in guiding choice of presentations to follow.
    The theme on COVID, Equity and Social Justice is timely. COVID-19 pandemic disrupted learning, with long school closures (http://bit.ly/Covid19SchoolClosures) and unpredictability of learning continuity due to variants of the virus. Data on the other hand shows that children of school-going age are less vulnerable to COVID (http://bit.ly/Covid19GraphAgeSex), yet duration of school closures were not correlated to the reported cases of COVID infections in many countries.

    The IC4 project speaks to the theme of this year's showcase, it provided hope for children who would have been idle and disengaged during the extended school closures, at least in Kenya, and kept them focused on learning through peer collaboration and accountability. That they are able to work on projects that transcend curriculum standards/ requirements, like coding, shows that with the right environment, students can set high expectations, engage in personally meaningful learning experiences and prototype solutions to societal problems. The experiences shared through the IC4 project also demonstrate that children from disadvantaged communities may realize their potentials at minimal investments. 

    Thanks Eric and the IC4 team for having imagined post-COVID learning ecosystem years before the pandemic!!

    Thank you for reflecting so thoughtfully on the showcase as a whole!  I know the organizing team behind the scenes (especially the wonderful folks at TERC, like Joni, Kathryn, Kim) works very hard to optimize the experience for all audiences, from the researchers, educators, participants, to our friends and family.  I was inspired by a request from our partners in Brazil to include Portuguese subtitles, and from there set to see what other subtitles we could include; thankful for our partners and team members who helped me review the different languages we currently have. 

    To the theme, it's interesting because our project was probably best suited to sustain through any challenges brought on by the pandemic since our community is virtual in nature-- and as you mentioned, we did see that IC4 could be a place for students could come together for something "normal" amidst all the changes their schools were needing to adapt to. 

    As always, we are so grateful to have your support to our project efforts over the years!

    Hi Miyun, You bring up a great point that alumni continue to be involved with IC4. As a people person, I really appreciate how IC4 has fostered many connections. I have been a researcher with IC4 for almost three years and I have seen the students begin when they are 12 and 13 years old and now they are in high school and college. The learners will tell you that they love being a part of IC4 because they make lifelong friends that are not in their school classes. They learn new languages too. But the students really feel as if they have contributed and made a lasting impact. That is why they join-to actually change the world-And they do!!  (And they have a lot of fun too!)

    Hi Everyone!

    My name Alice Jokodola and I have been a part of the IC4 research team for the past 2 years and it has been an amazing experience. It was mentioned in the video that IC4 bridges students from different continents, I find this to be the beauty and strength of IC4. Being able to see students who don't speak the same language, but yet build a friendship and bond through their STEM collaborations has been amazing to witness. This past year was a little tougher due to COVID, but our IC4 students got through it. I think COVID actually helped to uncover the true purpose of IC4 and its strength as a virtual project. 

    Even with the pandemic, we were able to expand into new countries and have even more students join the IC4 team. I am excited for the new academic year and I can't wait to see the projects our students come up with.

    As a teacher in ordinary circumstances, you are always faced with an incredibly difficult challenge of meeting the needs of learners with a range of abilities and learning levels. I am sure this a global phenomenon! It has been exciting to see you use IC4 club to address this problem by providing an opportunity for personalized learning experiences. Your students are always working on interesting topics that cut across multiple subject areas and projects that caters for their needs. Just recently, I really liked their idea of using an 80 watts bulb, an Arduino as a control motherboard and a temperature sensor to construct a simple incubator to hatch eggs. I am looking forward to your students completing this project.

    I agree, Kellie. The way students reflect and discover ways to address actual concerns is incredible. We had some IC4 students from the USA who were concerned about the pollution by the beach because they lived near a port. They organized beach cleanups and made u-tube videos highlighting the needs of their community. Benefits-the students feel like they've made a global impact and they get to hang out with their IC4 friends!

    Thank you Zach for Sharing this video. I was quite impressed that young students were able to learn and utilize the internet and learned to share knowledge through it. For instance, I saw the students in Kenya learn how to mix chemicals and produce liquid soap, and also do architectural designs.

    The only limitation I feel is that this was limited to below "O" level. With the event of COVID-19, it was clear that these are skills needed even in the universities. 

    Therefore, I give you all a thumbs up in this very relevant project.

    You are right IC4 students choose a topic that interests them, they then decide on their own what they want the audience to learn from the topic. They then research more about the topic using the internet and accessing resources from portals in the process growing their internet skills like: how to identify relevant content, key words that might identify the content, how they might use the internet to find content about their topics and how they reference a website from which the information originates. After they have completed working on their topic, they have an opportunity to share what they have created with others during a meetup where they receive feedback.

    There has been significant progress, especially after the national and local school closures in the fight against covid-19. The students not only had a great time involving their peers in the projects they were interested in, but they also had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to upgrade their skills to suit the demands of the twenty-first century.
    Since its inception in 2017, the IC4 has shown that students can collaborate and create digitally to achieve the targets set for their own projects, regardless of distance or pandemic.
    Going forward, I'll be proud to be a part of the facilitators and seeking solutions for the majority of my students that have been impacted by school closures by creating digital and non-digital media platforms that are readily available and can fit both independent and directed learning for educators, parents, and students to cover both digitally connected and digitally separated students.

    Ogalo thank you for watching our video and I love your comment about collaboration and creating digitally.

     

    IC4 students have been collaborating meaningfully with others and it often occurred best within a cycle them generating and improving on their projects. It all begins when they start planning about what the problem they want to solve and how they are going to solve it, then they discuss the problems synchronously through virtual meetups or asynchronously through slack channels, emails, review and make comments/give feedback on google docs. They do ask their peers to check their work and slides if elements they agreed on are missing or if they would like to change specific aspects of their topic. When it comes to sharing, they take turns to explain their project and answer any questions raised by their peers might have.

    It is wonderful to see such little ones with the kind of knowledge. I must say the work done in the showcased video is superb. 

    With no doubt I commend this program to carried on  even to extension of other countries. The pursuit of nanotechnology through incorporation of learners who have diverse knowledge, will make it more achievable.

    when we empower the young. We anonymously make influence to the world. Am also proud for the pioneers seeing capabilities in Kenyans.

    Yes the vision is achievable with IC4.

    Thank you Sabastian for taking the time to watch our IC4 video! It is exciting when as an adult I learn from the brilliant young minds with deep knowledge about topics in STEM.

    At the beginning of the project, I was always surprised that students can teach teachers too but now, I like the excitement of not knowing what I will face when I turn up to an IC4 virtual meetup every Saturday. A few weeks ago, I learned about different applications of nanotechnology in medicine from an IC4 student during her presentation. It was eye opening! Learning from students now is a way for me to deepen my practice as an educator, renew myself and negotiate the complexity of teaching and learning.

    Dr. Eric Hamilton and the IC4 Team: Ateng described it best when he wrote that he admired the "Stewardship" for this impactful research! 

    Vygotsky's ZPD is a cornerstone component of the study of teaching and learning. However, it is rarely (if ever) represented through the student serving as the "More Knowledgeable Other."  IC4 research spotlights the important contributions of students as MKOs for their educators. Educators reciprocate and the collaborative cycle benefits all! The IC4 research video also provided the most concise definition of ENA, which is often a gnarly concept to understand!

    in IC4 i learned a lot of things and in the program i learned to not be afraid when i talk to other people, i learned to do presentations, i learned to work with different people, i learned to express my self and i also improve my english, etc.

    Hello everyone, my name is Noemi Torres. I am a student from Las Vegas,NV USA. This is my first year in IC4. I really enjoy being part of this team. I have been able to learn about others cultures and learning from all the different students in the IC4. IC4 has helped me improve my communication skills. I have been able to communicate with other students from other countries in-order to collaborate together. And have been learning from all the groups. IC4 has been an amazing journey this year.     Hello everyone :) This is my first year in IC4 thank you to Noemi who brought me into this amazing collaboration of people from all over the world. It is very fun..... but serious working here with everyone. I have collaborated with Noemi and Johnny from here in Las Vegas and Lili from Morelia where also Florencia is from and  worked with me and Meshack who is from Kenya. I learned so much about them and gained so much knowledge about Python, Coding, Gluten, and Pet owners etc.  Everybody is super supportive and I am glad have gotten to know new people from Pepperdine, Mexico, Kenya, and Brazil. I hope can continue this amazing IC4 program, get more people to join, and soon when things get better with the pandemic, can meet everyone in person :)

My primary role is to support research and dissemination efforts for the project. It has been an honor to share about this unique and innovative research endeavor that Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Espino have worked so hard to develop over the years. Though much of my connection with students comes through qualitative coding and data analysis, it is fascinating to review meetup video recordings & transcripts and take in the wealth of knowledge that our students bring.     Hi all! I'm Luiz Oliveira from Brazil (graudated from Seaver Pepperdine in 2020). It has been an absolute pleasure being a part of IC4 for the past 3 years. 

    What really defines our online community are our young, bright, motivated student members from all over the world. Their consistent participation and enthusiasm are what drives the IC4 community and without them, IC4 would not be the amazing community that it is today. 

    Every week, we have the opportunity to witness amazing young minds come together to present and discuss STEM topics with one another. Throughout the hundreds of meet-ups that we've had over the years, I am able to learn from these students as I witness them talking and engaging with one another. It is inspiring to see such a young generation dedicated to continuous improvement and the search for knowledge and passion in STEM topics. Given the nature of our project, I am sure that our young members will one day step up to serve as innovative and courageous leaders that our world needs.

    I am truly grateful for every student member, site leader, facilitator, researcher, and contributor to our project and I believe everyone's unique contribution leaves a lasting impact in IC4!

    Eric - you mention that this project might be expanding into the Middle East, perhaps you might consider Uzbekistan?  I'm really intrigued by your approach and how it might support this countries drive to significantly raise the level of both STEM and English instruction, seems like you have had some great successes all over the globe that would apply to this new context.  If perhaps this sounds interesting I would love to see how I could support IC4 make the contacts to try to initiate a pilot or two.   You can reach me at stem4learning@gmail.com or check out my quick summary video trying to recruit some Uzbek STEM collaborators.

    As a member of IC4 project I can say that this is an incredible project that is helping me very much to improve my English and it also help me to socialize with more people around the world. In IC4 I gave my first international conference with only 14 years old and this makes me so happy for the opportunity that i have on here.     This project epitomizes what learning is all about. I have been following IC4 since its inception and love the collaboration between student and student as well as between facilitator and students. The multimedia projects are amazing and so relevant during these times of uncertainty. Understanding the differences in where people live and setting up a virtual platform to share these cultural differences provide deeper meaning to learning and allow students to appreciate cultural diversity.

    Well said, Dr. Calhoun! I agree that the IC4 project is indeed what learning is about. The student-to-student engagement is evident as we encourage student leaders to take the initiative in encouraging project collaboration. Our team has witnessed students from Kenya reaching out to teach Finnish students coding and offer assistance with their upcoming projects. We have even students who have joined a meetup (zoom meeting) for the first time and share a project idea with other school sites. Learners at IC4 have cultural differences, yet it is amazing to see the connection with each other in spite of any differences. Really, they are all kids who love to do STEM projects. This love of STEM forms a strong connection and allows them to persevere and shine way beyond anyone's expectations.

    IC4 is an incredible project. We live in a globalized society, however understanding the cultural differences of each location is very complex. And this is something that happens very smoothly in IC4. When we started activities in Brazil our main concern was the difficulty with the language, and in fact it is being something that encourages our students to understand new languages for better communication. The development of joint projects is also beautiful, as each student is very excited to learn more about the culture of another country. It is a great joy to participate in a project as wonderful as IC4.

    Hi, I'm Vítor from Brazil. I'm an undergraduate student of Physics and I started in IC4 a few months ago. I work in this project as teacher to help brazilian students develop their projects. What I can say about IC4, despite my short time of participation, is that it is doing something extremely important now a days. The world has changed and because of this we need to follow this development encouraging, principally  those responsible for the future, to continue learning and discovering more and more to understand and help this world that we live in. We now live in a globalized society and present this to the students is very important to show how different cultures can be and still work together. I see that this project helps not only the students, but everyone involved to develop their skills in all possible ways. It has been fantastic to contribute and learn with IC4.

    Hello, I'm Matheus from Brazil. I am a graduate student in Physics and started at IC4 a few months ago. I work on this project as a teacher to help Brazilian students develop their projects. In this time that I am in the project, I can already say that it is very necessary nowadays, as it favors contact between people from different places during this pandemic period and greatly enriches the students' knowledge. Nowadays many people are restricted to small groups and do not share their experiences, ideas and opinions, unlike the IC4 which covers everyone and allows an exchange of knowledge between different people from all over the world, with a relaxed and very welcoming environment. It is an incredible and very important project, I am very honored to be part of it :)

    It is so exciting to hear about the future IC4 video projects! Luiza from Brazil shared this morning about a new video she is working on with her friends. They are building a rocket!!! and entering a competition this month! I can't wait to see the end result!

    The level of self-drive among the students is just amazing. There are millions if learners across the globe whose greatest challenge to learning is low motivation manifested through negative attitufe and low achievement. IC4 is providing an enabling environment for learners to develop positive identity and self-awareness as they progress in building resilience through trials, failures and success. I guess Luiza and team willl go through mixed emotions as they work on the rocket project. Fortunately, these are the lived experiences of scientists. All the best as they refine their project and enter the competition

They are meeting peers from places all over the globe, and finding common ground in interests and collaborations. It is broadening their horizons and providing inspiration and encouragement for them to build their skills and share their knowledge.     Some of the difficulties that students face in their global participation in IC4 are to accommodate their time to be able to collaborate with other students from other countries with different schedules, with different ways of life and routines, and from time to time in some occasions having problems of connectivity in the internet. The global collaboration plans in IC4 in the future are many, but they still need to be defined. We start to think what steps we must follow to continue innovating to continue learning globally from our extraordinary students.

    Building off of what Israel said, the time difference is our biggest challenge when trying to establish live global meetups, however over the past year or two this has become less of an issue.  We seem to have remedied this by scheduling standing meetings every Saturday.  Additionally, the teacher leaders meet once a month to give updates from their sites and discuss new initiatives and projects.  These meetings are key to establishing best practices, building empathy and understanding of the challenges and successes of each site, and plan for upcoming meetings. I am so thankful for the leadership and support provided by Dr. Hamilton, Danielle, Seung, as well as each of the site leaders. It is truly the collective effort of our team that allows our talented and innovative students to learn and gro with one another.

    The team in Los Angeles goes above and beyond, and we can all see it in the quality of the work content students produce. Waking up every Saturday at 6 am, or 7 am after a full day of work is a commitment and labor of love.     To Virginia's challenges question: many of the students have reported that their biggest challenge with IC4 was not the language barrier or understanding a dialect, but rather scheduling and consistent communication with other school site peers. One of Shad's U.S. students reported that they would check the Slack site for project updates and for two weeks their were no messages from the collaborating school. This was due to lack of internet connectivity and available resources at the time. Noted it was also pre-Covid. Students in another U.S. location expressed similar struggles with the Finland site, that the students in Finland were slow to responding to Slack messages.  This may have been due to other responsibilities, time constraints, prioritizing school exams, etc. Projects might have been delayed and/or collaborative partners changed at the last second, in order to complete the projects. The students/learner's frustration demonstrated that they really were invested in IC4 and disappointed when other commitments impeded their ability complete projects.

    All of the students/learners reported how much they love IC4 and regret that they don't more time for it. They all felt like they make an impact on the world. 

    We persevere in spite of challenges!

    I am very excited to see Cameroon girls in the video. This project gives voice to children in every part of the globe who can participate. It is wonderful to watch the changes in self-efficacy and quality of content the students create. I notice the beauty in how the language and voices play throughout the video, representing participants' cultures.

    I wondered, though, why was North Africa presented to appear as part of the Middle East and not Africa as a whole?

    Hi, and thank you for your comments.  On your question, North Africa and the Middle East are often group together - the acronym "MENA" is common.  In the same way, Sub-Sahara is also treated as a grouping.  In any case, we avoid talking about Africa monolithically - around 50 countries, each very distinct!  I hope that helps, and thank you again.

    I agree about talking about Africa monolithically. You know, my heart doesn't seem to care much for the MENA grouping or the sub-Saharah groupings. It's hard to explain why so I will have to reflect on why I think and feel this way. Maybe one of the kids in the video might create content around this topic.

    I agree with your remarks on monolithic characterisation of cultures. There's a way in which socialization contributes to perceptions of learning and actual learning engagement. Where children are socialized to speak less, they're unlikely to externalise their thoughts / reasoning, with a probable risk of negative labels on their cognitive abilities.

    Schools also have a socialization effect beyond the impact from the community, and those less verbal might be wrongly characterized. Therefore, it's empowering to have opportities for expressing multiple intelligences. IC4 uses video to gradually enable learners to be more confident communicators as they collaborate with peers and leaders

    You hit on multiple good points, Ateng. As a student who was taught to be quiet and listen in class, I have found it very challenging in Western environments where you are expected to speak up in class or group sessions. There is move improvement not, but the internal dialogue and second-guessing of my opinions sometimes cause me to retreat. Encouraging children to speak up in a culturally appropriate way is necessary, especially for African countries. Our children learn as they play in groups, making IC4 a suitable model for teaching children on the continent.

Dewey's experiential learning theory is exemplified in the design of this project through it's collaboration and reflection component. It is fascinating to see the wealth of knowledge shared from a cultural lens; while also using technology as the main catalyst; amidst the constrains of a global pandemic.     Great work Dr. Hamilton. Whenever I look at these collaborative activities, I am so impressed because having grown up in this part of the world, at some point, one would feel like a second class human being, due to cultural restrictions and demands especially for the girls. Giving our young learners that exposure to interact with students across the globe is just incredible. The level of reasoning is not limited by geographical, cultural or economic barriers!!! I like how Kenyan students fit in and present their arguments with confidence. This is bound to develop a good research culture among the young professionals who will be channeled from our education system. My question to Dr. Hamilton, are their plans to follow up these young researchers past high school level of education? Or is it assumed that the research and collaborative spirit will be completely developed by the time they get into the tertiary education?

    Hi Ms Mukiri, your comments are poignant for us. It was actually Kenyan students, mostly from Kibera, who first started making a lot of student contributions to the video forum four years ago.  At first, I thought, these are children talking in grown-up community.  I am ashamed to say that made me uncomfortable, until the realization hit me that we had an opportunity for these children to have voice in other parts of the world where they would not otherwise be given access. I was embarrassed that I did not see that right away.  And of course, the projects themselves form a way to function in intellectually and culturally nourishing ways.

    On your question, we do have some college student involvement, but more than that is beyond our current capacity.  We do have alums like Ateamate Mukabana and Denis Okello who facilitate the global meetups - they are remarkable good at it.  We would love to do more, and dream in that direction.  We also think that the pandemic may help spur more vigorous effort in building such collaboration.

    The Brazillian team is an example to all clubs. Their dedication to the project is inspiring. They use whatever tools at their disposal to overcome the language barrier and are not deterred by this challenge.     Thank you very much for your comment Ruth, I agree with you, at the beginning my biggest concern was communication due to the differences between English and Portuguese, it is clear that Luiz has been a great encourager and motivator of our students, however IC4 shows that the barriers are only in our minds, as our students have shown that they can and want to overcome the boundaries of language, economic, social, cultural and everything that can block human interactions, that's why this project is inspiring.     Dr. Hamilton and Team...job well done. I know from experience virtual education is not easy and yet you have gathered underrepresented populations from around the world, and allowed them to explore STEM in a tangible way. As a k-12 District administrator I fully understand the need for hands on, relevant learning experiences. I love the students that utilized everyday ingredients to create useful end-products. I look forward to the connections that have been fostered by IC4, producing socially conscious scientist, engineers, and entrepreneurs.

    I totally agree Luiz, I will get with Dr. Hamilton and Dr. Espino to see how HoustonISD can collaborate moving forward. We have some amazing STEM schools (inclusive of all boys and all girls schools) that would benefit from this collective collaboration model.

    It’s really good to see the great work going on here despite the pandemic. It’s encouraging! I feel privileged to have been part of this and the lessons I took with me, which are communication, problem solving and team work.

    Initially, people who are unfamiliar with IC4 see this as a STEM science video-makers club. However, the various languages and cultures of the learners emerge as the core of true learning. As the STEM media topics are fascinating, the students/learners: their lives, their stories, and their backgrounds influence their media projects. We had a student who created a video about Suicide. When his IC4 peers asked him what influenced him to make this video, he felt safe enough to share that he had attempted suicide, entered counseling, and now he wanted to somehow, help others through his video. We all applauded him for his bravery, but this project was not strictly about science. IC4 is about the global issues affecting these students and IC4 empowers them to use their voice, their knowledge, and yes, their STEM video projects to make a difference in the world.

    Diversity is all about us, and about us having to figure out how to face new challenges and come up with solutions together. IC4 gives a perfect platform to youths from various backgrounds. This is a real ground for creativity providing a chance for developing new ideas and debating differences all with an aim of better understanding of the world we live in. The fact that globalization continues to make the world smaller and more accessible, we must take advantage and get to learn from people coming from different continents. I believe that our backgrounds influence the way that we think and since there are various youths from different background, an idea or a problem being handled gets a taste of several thoughts from different point of views.
    This is really great work. Keep transforming lives!

    One outstanding observation from the video is that the participants are learning and implementing  all the 21st century skills implicitly. Its incredible how the skills are reflected not only in their peer discussions, but also on the projects they are jointly working and even the products they come up with which seemingly are a result of diverse opinions and thoughts. 

    This is absolutely astounding!!! Well done to everyone involved.

     Really impressive. I enjoyed the diversity in the participants. The video emphasizes on collaborative, inquiry, problem and project based learning which is what is needed in today's classrooms. Congratulations to all the participants for their great success.

    It's been an amazing experience collaborating with IC4. Since the beginning process to recruit students all the way to see and withness how amazing they have enhanced collaboration global skills. I had witness how the students one global meeting at a time they have developed self-confidence, communication skills, and social skills. It brings me to joy to know that our IC4 students are making a difference.
