Hi, all!  It's an honor to be part of the 2021 Showcase as a member of Project Ianos:

And, of course, we couldn't do anything without the funding, support, and access provided by NASA and its amazing contractors.

We hope you'll enjoy watching this video, as we are proud to pull back the curtain on Project Ianos just a bit as we make preparations for our soft-launch into schools this summer. And we invite you to join our mission!  Please help us "engage and educate students with the wonders of space and to inspire them to become explorers of it" by commenting on and voting for this initiative.

    Thank you!!
    Josh Bernstein & Co.

This is an exciting project. Can you share more about the particular lessons or experiences students will have when engaging in the software?  What do you see as the potential impact of your work with students? What measures will you be using to assess their learning and engagement?

Thanks, Folashadé! I'm happy to answer your questions now and possibly add more later, as we are a team at Project Ianos and I want my colleagues to respond, too (if they like).

Q: Can you share more about the particular lessons or experiences students will have when engaging in the software?

A: When Project Ianos launches this summer on PCG's "Pepper" platform for teachers, it will have two primary opportunities for engagement. The first are Videos produced and hosted by me and Explorer At Large. In these short (<5 min) videos, I pursue answers to student-submitted questions about space with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from NASA and contractors like Blue Origin, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and ILC Dover. These Videos introduce students to people working on the front lines of human spaceflight in the past (Apollo program), present (Artemis program) and future (living on the Moon).

After watching the Videos, teachers and students can participate in Expeditions -- standards-aligned activities that connect the concepts and topics in the Videos with real-world tasks, which we call Missions. Project Ianos Missions invite students to participate in spaceflight-related tasks that involve data literacy, engineering design loop processes, and prototype testing/building of concepts.

Q: What do you see as the potential impact of your work with students?

A: Project Ianos content connects classroom learning to career path opportunities. Through our Videos, students are invited to meet real-world experts and discover possible passions in STEM topics. Through our Expeditions, students are invited to become explorers of space, solving Missions related to specific themes in human spaceflight (e.g. Rocket Launches, Deep Space Life, Living on the Moon, Working on the Moon). We believe this combination provides students with the mindset and a skillset of an explorer -- something that will prepare students for the challenges and triumphs of the future.

Q: What measures will you be using to assess their learning and engagement?

A: University of Kansas is our Research & Evaluation partner and is developing the survey instruments for evaluation now. We anticipate survey tools within the Pepper platform will track content use by teachers and measure the amount of time teachers and students engage in additional STEM-related research and activities based on their exposure to the Project Ianos content. As the program grows, the learning and engagement assessment tools will continue to be developed so we can consistently improve Project Ianos content and implementation.

Thanks for your questions! Any more, please ask!  - Josh (Project Ianos Host & Content Team Leader)

Thank you for sharing the exciting plans for this project that is about to launch! Content drawn from actual missions often has immediate appeal. Can you say a little bit more about how you are connecting to what teachers are charged with covering in their classrooms and whether you have made any adjustments to the project design in response to the challenges of the past year?

Thanks for the question, Jamie! As a current STEM teacher of 20 years and co-developer of the Project Ianos educational content I can say we have crafted these Expeditions to be not only relevant to current NGSS standards, but also future looking data literacy standards as well. Each Expedition is comprised of three Missions focused on career-ready skills.  Mission 1 in each set focuses on students taking on the role of a data scientist, testing data literacy with an emphasis on digital spreadsheet skills. Mission 2 places students in the design studio and guides them through the first part of a design process focusing on constraints, research, brainstorming and sketching. Each Expedition concludes with Mission 3 and students taking on the role of test engineers. This prototyping and testing activity has students engaged in constructing systems for research and data analysis resulting in a mission report on that determines efficacy.  The three Missions are designed to work in progression however we have also designed the Expeditions to be accessible as 'a la carte’  as we recognize teachers need options to supplement existing curriculum, not always replace it.  Missions 1 and 2 each are designed to run as two easily accessible 50-minute classes and Mission 3 as five 50-minute class periods. Materials needed to run the ‘lab' activities are at a minimum with no major technological hurdles to stifle participation. With our new paradigm of hybrid learning options, each of the Missions is also designed to be run in three formats: 1) in class with teacher, 2) remote with teacher and 3) with supplemental data, student independent.  We want every student, no matter how she or he is set up to learn, to be able to access Project Ianos content. Just scratching the surface here, hope this helps. I would be happy to discuss more.  Peace :)  - James Burke, Project Ianos Education Content Co-Leader

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, James. It's great to hear about the a la carte and hybrid learning options to support both teachers and students at this unique time. Starting with students questions is essential and I was wondering if individual students know when and where their questions are being asked and addressed?

We're working on that now, Jamie! The students who appear in our initial Videos for Project Ianos will have a bit more awareness than, say, students a few years from now, as the current students are engaged in shaping our pilot episodes.

Down the road, we hope thousands of video questions are submitted by students all over the world and we can then select those that are best tied to a topic, a theme, a location, etc in human spaceflight.

Using actual student questions as a starting point is a great way to ensure student engagement.  The career path connection is so important too.  I can imagine a light bulb moment for a student, thinking that a question they might have can lead to a career involving further exploration.

Right???! We're very happy that it's real questions from actual students that launch (pun intended) the journey I take as host in each video. For our initial pilot episodes, we went through 1500+ questions from middle school students on topics like Rockets, Spacesuits, Living in Space, and Working in Space, and then filmed the interviews with SMEs to help answer them. We hope future episodes of Project Ianos videos will be driven by many more questions from many more students!  -Josh (Project Ianos Host & Content Team Leader)

Hello Markia :) It is very difficult to know which activities would prove successful for any particular class of that level. Teacher prep and sufficient scaffolding, determined by the teacher, would be required.  With that said, Mission 2 in each of the four initial Project Ianos Expeditions is a design unit.  Students research a design problem and determine a possible solution based on research and peer discussion. Upon completion of the Mission, students have designed a postcard that has an option of being sent to Blue Origin’s Club for the Future (a Project Ianos partner), and they will send it up into space as payload on a New Shepard rocket.  Once the postcard returns from space it is stamped "Flown in Space" by Club for the Future and sent to the student or teacher for distribution.  This "souvenir" from space makes a nice reward for successfully completing the design journey and, we hope, offers students a tangible connection to a possible future journey in space. :) Peace  - James Burke, Project Ianos Education Content Co-Leader

Hi, Markia! Great to see you here! As James said, it's certainly possible for teachers to adapt what we're delivering to NASA for grades beyond 5-8. For 3rd graders, the Videos alone may offer opportunities for conversations and activities related to topics like spacesuits, rocket engines, living in space, working in space. Eventually, we'll create multiple versions of the Videos as well as Expeditions and Missions for Project Ianos. If you'd like to help us test that in 3rd grade, we'd love to work with you! All the best! - Josh (Project Ianos Host & Content Team Leader)

Your enthusiasm is so inspiring, Amy! I work with Josh at Explorer At Large and our pilot involved younger students. Our instructional Units for Explorer At Large integrate video, hands-on activities, and field trips.

It was thrilling to see even the youngest students asking questions inspired by Josh's videos. One module involved a field trip to a creek, which for many of these inner-city students was a first-time experience. I'll never forget the excitement and joy on their faces as they saw their first crayfish or salamander.

We know the same will be true for space and the Project Ianos team aspires to expand our content and distribution to engage students across the entire K-12 range.

Such a well crafted resource. The work put into it is immediately apparent especially the made for teachers by teachers aspect. With the realities of some kids still receiving instruction at home, will you create a pathway for parents as teachers to use the resources or a DIY option for kids to work through on their own?

Great question Shane! Project Ianos Expeditions are each equipped with Mission Journals that provide students with a context for their learning. Additionally, the Mission Journals provide a sequential pathway for students to engage and reflect on the processes and content of each Mission. We will also be providing supplemental video tutorials that students can interact with to learn data literacy and help them with those Missions requiring a build. Instructional resources like lesson plans, templates, academic standards, assessment rubrics, hints and tips will also be available for parents in the role of teachers.

Hi, Shane! Thanks so much for the question! I agree that having Project Ianos learning materials being made by teachers (Thank you, Jason & James!) for teachers is truly critical, as it helps ensure what we put into formal learning environments is exactly what teachers need to engage and educate their students. But you raise a great point.... what about informal learning? Home schooling? Afterschool programming?  DIY learners? We agree that Project Ianos shouldn't be limited to just classroom settings and, as our distribution channels evolve and grow, we have every intention to offer easy access to those who want a DIY option. If you'd like to be informed of those developments, please go to ProjectIanos.org and submit your e-mail address. We'll be sure to keep you posted!  - Josh (Project Ianos Host & Content Team Leader)

Hello. The project looks interesting, but considering the strife on earth caused by the desire for territory, how do you think people will behave once Mars is colonized, and becomes overpopulated?

Perhaps population and its effects should be included when it comes to humans leaving Earth.

Great synergy in the design of this project. It seems to be playing to so many strengths of the project team members as well as meeting students and educators where they are today. Such a great quote in the beginning about children today applying for jobs on the moon!

Wondering if there has been thought of space and ocean analogues?

There are a growing set of projects that are merging these two "worlds" or modes of exploration and playing to the strengths of both dynamic industries.

At the Graduate School of Oceanography located at the University of Rhode Island we are now led by an incredible person, the former Director of NASA's Earth Science Division (Dr. Paula Bontempi) and she has brought her NASA love for science and storytelling to the world of ocean exploration and climate science. These types of synergies are exciting with their potential alone but when in context of engaging and inspiring students, the impacts could launch pretty deeply into public interest!

Great thought Alex!  In fact a bunch of folks from the emerging space and oceanographic communities got together about 50 years ago to talk about the sea and space.  My dad was one of them.  We are still going strong.  Right now we are focused on NASA and human exploration.  But Project Ianos will be extending its scope in the future and this is certainly a promising direction.

Thanks, Alex! Echoing what Andy said, there are many parallels between space exploration and ocean exploration and interesting similarities between astronauts and aquanauts, both in training and mindset. Our mutual friend Dr. Kathy Sullivan is a great champion of the sea-space connection.

Project Ianos is intentionally focused on human spaceflight, but Explorer At Large has filmed content with NOAA and WHOI and we're always interested in meeting and working with those who share our love for the ocean. Happy to discuss further offline to see if there are opportunities here. - Josh (Project Ianos Host & Content Team Leader)

I agree, Anita. Space is a new wilderness for all humanity and we aspire to make Project Ianos available to students around the world. It's my job to secure the funding to make that possible. We want to engage with students everywhere, sparking their curiosity and igniting their desire to explore.

That passion is evident in Carla Careri, a member of the SSC team at Kiruna space center.

"I wish to always be able to see the big picture, the purpose hidden behind the documents to read, the procedures to update, the systems to test and to always find in it the excitement and the motivation I can find today."  - Carla Careri

Thanks, Leigh!  Here are some initial answers for you:

Q: How do we let educators in our area know about Project Ianos as a resource?

A: If the educators work in schools or districts served by the Pepper platform, they should look there for news about the launch of Project Ianos in June. Another option is to keep an eye on ProjectIanos.org, as we'll be putting info there, too.

Q: What materials are supplied to them to help support the curriculum?

A: I suspect the "J-Team" (Jason and James, our Education Content Co-Leaders) will want to address, as they are responsible for creating some really amazing standards-aligned activities (called Expeditions and Missions) that connect the Videos to classroom learning. Stay tuned for them to chime in!

Hi Leigh.

What I really like about Project Ianos video content is the footage of so many subject matter experts speaking to how they are involved with space endeavors. Thank you, Margaret! We're working on the PR plan for launch right now. Much of our initial launch campaign will target teachers, schools, and districts using PCG's Pepper platform. Once Project Ianos content is up and working well there, we'll expand to broader markets of teachers. If you have ideas, we're happy to collaborate!

This looks amazing! I wish there was a program like this when I was in middle school. Teaching data literacy is going to be extremely important for todays youth. It will soon become a needed skill for everyone to learn. Making Science fun is something that takes a lot of finesse as is keeping students engaged and I'm excited to see the new techniques that the educators come up with. Science and STEM are fundamental to our future.

Thank you, Djeneba! I also wish Project Ianos existed back when I was in school...and the earth was still molten :-). Data literacy is a huge area of importance for Project Ianos content, as each "Mission 1" intentionally focuses on data sets (students take on the role of data scientists, testing data literacy with an emphasis on digital spreadsheet skills). More to come as we make progress this summer!

I think the most interesting piece is getting this course to the populations in underserved communities.  Reading the biographies of many of the astronauts, it's amazing how many of them come from rural communities!  The Coronavirus had at least one positive outcome -  more Internet for all.

That's how all of us on the Project Ianos team feel. We take the long view in all we do under Project Ianos, knowing that the children we engage today are humanity's future explorers. We're certain that if we can ignite a child's natural curiosity and instill in them the courage to ask questions and seek answers, we'll be setting them on a positive course for the future.

Also, for context, we've studied and tested this formula (videos to pique interest followed by standards-aligned activities to deepen context and learning) in Ohio schools for the past 3 years with great success. For Project Ianos, the main difference is now the content is focused purely on human spaceflight. Plus we have a bigger team :-)

We agree :) To address this issue we have created Project Ianos :) Hopefully all students from this point forward will know only cool space based STEM activities from their middle school years ;)   Peace  - James Burke, Project Ianos Education Content Co-Leader

This is really cool to see and hear about. I wish things like this were around when I was growing up as well as a few of my friends who I know would have loved something like this.

Thanks, Emonie. Do you have kids? Friends with kids? If so, we'd love to bring the fun and excitement of Project Ianos to them. Everyone is invited to submit their e-mail at ProjectIanos.org so we can tell them when we launch later this summer!

I feel the same way, Emonie.

I know that if I had been exposed to something like this as a child, it might have changed the course of my life. I was just an average student, but there were brilliant kids in the Catholic schools I attended, yet they were never exposed to anything like Project Ianos. They would have loved it!

    This looks great!

From watching your “Digging for the truth” series previously Josh, I’m sure this will be as educational as it will be entertaining! Middle school students are at that “perfect” impressionable age where their interests can be directed towards STEM topics. And we need that interest for and in our future leaders!

    Looking forward to this!

Oh, man! A "Digging" fan!! Thanks, Robert!!

I totally agree -- we need to inspire students when they're young! It opens doors and creates passions that can lead to exciting opportunities and lifelong learning. We'll see how Project Ianos goes....but we're all excited!  Thanks for your support!

It's so gratifying to hear that, Robert!

Everyone on the Project Ianos team is passionate about reaching every Middle School student and then expanding into Elementary schools and High School. We agree that if we can get kids engaged in STEM early, we have a much better chance of keeping them engaged throughout their school years and careers.

This project sounds exciting! Will you be able to incorporate some real-life math applications into your project? We need help in those areas.

Yes, Mark! Data literacy is the focus of Mission 1 in each Project Ianos Expedition, so math will be required! (and thankfully, placed in a very cool real-world context for those of us who may have wished all math was presented in such a way).

    Great input, Mark!

I will defer to the professional educators on our team for a specific response to your question, but each of our Instructional Units includes activities exploring a core set of questions. "Payloads" for instance would be a great opportunity to include calculations for weights and dimensions.

There is math :) Good, wholesome, project based, authentically applied math :) Did I mention that it is used for informed decision making? Its real, and its good ;)   Peace  - James Burke, Project Ianos Education Content Co-Leade

The NSF's 2021 STEM For All Video Showcase is about to close….Before it does, I want to say thanks to everyone who has participated and give a special shout out to each person above who has taken time to watch the Project Ianos video and ask questions. That's the fun (and the point!) of the Showcase -- to foster community discussion around education and shine a spotlight on some truly phenomenal programs funded (in part or in whole) by government grants.

And an extra super-special shout out to all my teammates at Project Ianos for taking the time to join the conversation and contribute to the lively exchange.

    Now let’s go for launch!
