Thank you for investigating our video about the ReBUILDetroit program!

ReBUILDetroit is part of an initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health to increase diversity of scientists researching health issues and health disparities. This program targets undergraduate institutions to implement and study innovative approaches for engaging and retaining students from diverse backgrounds in biomedical-research pathways with early exposure to scientific research.

ReBUILDetroit Program is designed to increase participation in biomedical research by addressing 3-dimensions of higher education institutions:

    • Students
    • Faculty
    • Institution

The interventions from ReBUILDetroit have created momentum for institutional transformation that is needed across higher education to remedy barriers to access, sense of belonging, and success.    We welcome your thoughts and questions!

As the co-PI for the ReBUILDetroit program, I also wish to express my appreciation for your interest in our efforts.  Wayne State University acts as the research partner for this initiative and actively seeks research placements on our campus for UDMercy ReBUILDetroit scholars and supports the creation of research partnerships between UDMercy faculty and Wayne State faculty.  The efforts made on both campuses to create an atmosphere of inclusive excellence for all students is a cornerstone of the program and will be a focus of the interventions disseminated through our team.  Different than other BUILD programs, Wayne State also supports cohorts of WSU students as scholars on our campus as the research partner through institutional funds to broaden the impact of the program and to provide a more enriching experience for scholars on both campuses.  This approach also promotes the creation of sustainable relationships not only at the awardee institution but also for the region.   I welcome your thoughts on our efforts and would love to get to know others pursuing such efforts.

Hello ReBUILDetroit Team!  I enjoyed your video very much.  I loved hearing the student voices, and seeing the images of the students presenting their research.  Will there be any longitudinal tracking of ReBUILD students to see whether they continue on their biomedical research path?

There is longitudinal tracking of student outcomes to see what educational/employment paths they take.  We are also keeping BUILD graduates engaged with events and colloquium opportunities in the program to provide guidance and perspective to current BUILD scholars.

Congratulations on a great program that engaged minoritized students in research, which as you say is one of the most impactful ways to engage students in science. I am curious what you do to support those students after their research experiences in guiding them into the workforce or graduate school. Also, do many of your students go on to graduate school?
